Migration Story

As the Africanist saying goes, I am because we are β€” Jokager β€” from the Kanyidoto lineage, Kawuor house. My story begins long before I ever boarded a Lufthansa flight to Germany, long before passports and biometric appointments. It begins with my ancestors who moved with nothing but courage, cattle, and the stubborn belief that the world should make room for them. The Kager people trace their roots to the early Luo migrations from the upper Nile region. My forefathers journeyed southward through Padhola and Samia, following the rhythm of rivers and the promise of better land. When they reached Ugenya, they found rolling hills, fertile soil, and neighbours who argued loudly enough to feel familiar. The Kanyidoto branch β€” my people β€” settled in the wider Ugenya–Yimbo belt. We were known for our mobility; we moved like we were allergic to staying in one place too long. Some went toward Yimbo, others toward the lake, but the Kawuor house remained anchored in the heart of Kanyidoto. From Kawuor came men who built homesteads with wide gates, women whose laughter could shame thunder, and elders who told stories so long you forgot what the original question was. We grew up on cattle paths, fishing tales, millet porridge, and the quiet pride of knowing exactly where we come from. My own journey took a different turn. I traded the red soil of Ugenya for the cobblestones of Germany β€” a place where trains keep time like they’re afraid of disappointing someone. I carry my lineage with me in every introduction, every pot of ugali I cook in a foreign kitchen, every time I explain that β€œyes, Luo names have meaning, and no, I cannot shorten mine to make it easier.” Even here, thousands of kilometres from home, I walk with the memory of my people: the migrations from the Nile, the settling in Ugenya, the branching of Kanyidoto, the strength of Kawuor. I am a modern wanderer, but my roots are ancient. I am Jokager β€” a son of Kanyidoto β€” carrying the journey of my ancestors into a new land, a new language, and a new life. And no matter how far I go, the path always leads back to where the story began: the homestead of Kawuor, the heartbeat of my lineage
