Migration Story

A daughter of the Kwaro Nyikwang lineage — yes, that Nyikwang, the people who walk into a room and suddenly everyone remembers their posture. I was born on the west bank of the White Nile, where the river curves like it is admiring itself. My childhood smelled of fish smoke, cattle hide, and the kind of gossip that travels faster than the Malakal wind. Our lineage traces itself to Nyikwang, one of the proud branches of Nyikang’s great tree. We grew up knowing that our ancestors didn’t just migrate — they announced themselves. They crossed rivers, founded hamlets, and argued with the wind until it agreed to blow in their direction. My people moved along the Nile, settling in places where the soil was generous and the spirits were not easily offended. From Lul to Tonga to Wau Shilluk, our footsteps stitched themselves into the riverbank. We carried our cattle, our songs, our stubbornness, and our belief that the Nile was not just water — it was memory. My own journey took a different turn. I traded the river’s rhythm for the hum of airports, the dust of the cattle kraal for the cold efficiency of immigration counters. Now I live far from the Nile, in a land where people schedule their emotions and trains arrive with military discipline. But even here, I walk with the confidence of a daughter of Nyikwang. I cook kisra in a foreign kitchen, I correct people when they mispronounce my name, and I carry the Nile in my voice. I am Nyadol Garang — a modern wanderer with ancient roots. My body may live abroad, but my shadow still sits by the river, listening to the stories of my ancestors
